Job Summary:  

Under the limited supervision of the Senior Director, Academic Success, the Director, Academic Success will work to design and implement a strategic Technology Initiative for BGCA and the Boys & Girls Club Movement.  The Director will provide leadership specifically in redesigning, managing and implementing a multi-disciplinary, multi-faceted Technology Program that includes summer and year round learning modules plus college and career preparation efforts.  This position is currently funded by Comcast through December 2014; the availability of the position is contingent upon continued and/or additional funding.

 

Job Functions:

1.   Implement a Strategic Plan for Technology Programs  

  • Working with a curriculum developer, re-envision BGCA’s introductory technology strategy and program. 
  • Research, draft and refine a full strategic plan for technology education at BGCA.
  • Implement strategies for academic success within BGCA’s strategic plan, Formula for Impact.
  • Promote BGCA’s Academic Success strategy to promote high school graduation and post-secondary success to the Movement and external audiences.
  • Work with other BGCA staff to support the technology area of the STEM Advisory Committee.

 

2. Develop STEM-Focused Learning Curricula

  • Work collaboratively with internal and external partners to develop multi-disciplinary, technology-focused, summer and school year learning curricula for elementary, middle and high school age members.
  • Work with other Academic Success team and Training & Professional Development staff to develop a training model for local Clubs and national staff.
  • Development, test and refine strategies and tools for successful use of technology throughout the Club space.
  • Work with Clubs and Club staff to pilot technology curricula implementation, staff training, and strategies.

 

3.     Manage Operations of the Service

  • Provide training, consultation and technical assistance to sites to assure high-level implementation.
  • Coordinate travel for site visits conference calls for program updates and technical assistance to sites.
  • Prepare reports about program design and/or implementation for various audiences.
  • Work collaboratively with other Academic Success program team members to support other funded projects and PYDS initiatives that enable Clubs to effectively support educational achievement for their members.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and collaborations with organizations that can provide advice, direction and support to BGCA’s educational initiative.
  • Coordinate work of BGCA staff in Program, Training & Youth Development Services, Training & Professional Development, Resource Development and Marketing in achieving organizational goals and objectives related to this initiative.
  • Perform special assignments and assist with special projects in Program, Training & Youth Development Services as directed by the Senior Director, Academic Success, including Club consultations and Youth Development trainings.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field or in youth development when combined with technology-related responsibilities; experience with game design and/or advanced degree(s) preferred
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in the STEM or STEM education field of youth development; Boys & Girls Club experience preferred.
  • Community outreach experience required.
  • Knowledge of project-based education programs, knowledge of how youth learn.
  • Demonstrated ability to create fun learning environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with parents, schools, and others in the community to support educational achievement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental assets and youth development principles/characteristics.    
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills required.    

 

Environmental and Working Conditions

Normal internal office environment.  Travel estimated at 25% – 30% (can be up to 5- 7 days or more in a month – including weekends – depending upon scheduling requirements). The individual selected for this position must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to navigate areas of the country by using a map or other direction methods.

High energy level, comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities. Superior interpersonal abilities.  Ability to get along with diverse personalities, at all times displaying tact, maturity and flexibility.  Good reasoning abilities and sound judgment.  Physical requirements include sight, hearing, sitting for four plus hours per day.  Skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing. Must be physically able to travel by air, car, train, or other modes of transportation.
