Title: Director Web Development and Strategy
Reports to: Managing Director
Location: preference for Oakland, CA or New York, NY
The Applied Research Center (ARC) is a 31-year old national racial justice organization whose mission is to build awareness, solutions and leadership for racial justice by generating transformative ideas, information and experiences. By telling the stories of everyday people, ARC is a voice for unity and fairness in the structures that affect our lives. Our multi-racial and diverse staff primarily pursues the organization’s mission through:
Media – as publisher of, a daily news site where race matters
Research – as producer of such recent racial justice reports as Good Food and Good Jobs for AllShattered FamiliesBetter Together; and Don’t Call Them Post-Racial
Leadership Development – as organizational consultants and trainers, host of Racial Justice Skill-Building Webinars, and conveners of the biennial Facing Race National Conference
We are looking for a Director of Web Development and Strategy with experience building content driven websites that engage users to interact with the online community. The perfect candidate will also bring a passion for online engagement, advocacy, and a cutting edge knowledge of digital technology. The Director of Web Development and Strategy will have primary responsibility over web development, long term planning of online operations, and execution of all online programs which include the Applied Research Center ( and Colorlines ( web sites, email campaigns, social media, and webinars. The Director of Web Development and Strategy will be a member of the senior leadership team and will work closely with staff across the organization to match technology with program needs. This person is also responsible for contributing to the development of a business model that expands revenue opportunities and creates a marketing-to-sales pipeline. S/he will report to the Managing Director and will be responsible managing growing but small team, interdepartmental teams, procuring vendors and managing the on-line engagement aspects of special projects and programs that further our organizational Mission and Vision.
The salary range for this position is $75,000 – $85,000 annually, depending on experience. In addition, we offer an excellent benefits package including health and dental insurance, flexible spending account, retirement plan, transportation stipend, vacations, and a sabbatical.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Technology Leadership
• Oversee the redesign and rebranding of, including upgrades to the front-end design and UX, as well as back-end content management system and dependent external software integrations.
• Manage day-to-day website operations and team of internal web producers of and
• Participate as member of ARC’s senior management team, setting direction for organizational life and strategies in furtherance of ARC’s Mission, Vision and Values.
• Develop and monitor budget and resources related to web development and strategy work and implementation
• Work with interdepartmentally with teams to create and implement our engagement strategies
• Research latest trends and offerings in digital strategy and online activism to ensure that and are taking advantage of developments in new technology, tools, and platforms that aid in our business, partner and community engagement goals in furtherance of our Mission
• Develop and oversee a robust analytics program for all online activities
Project Management & Web Development
• Oversee the planning, implementation and maintenance of the and websites to maximize engagement, ensure updated and dynamic content, and build community
• Manage freelance web developers and build an internal team to reduce external work done by vendors
• Lead the ongoing development of ARC’s growing social media presence
• Manage and execute digital strategy in conjunction with all departments which include web & mobile sites, email, social media, e-commerce, product development, to help drive and reach their goals  
Technical Operations
• Manage website vendors and external partnerships from a technical perspective; including front-end solutions, back-end servers, as well as data-collection applications
• Ensure alignment of online technology products to organizational mission and goals
• Maintain existing Salesforce implementation and manage future upgrades  
• 7+ years of experience in web development and 3+ years of experience in Social Media
• 4+ years of experience in managing projects, ability to supervise teams and consultants
• 3+ years of experience in website development—HTML 5, CSS 3, JavaScript and jQuery, LAMP, AJAX
• 2+ years of experience maintaining a backend server
• BS/BA degree or equivalent work experience
• Strong knowledge of web usability best practices; content management methods and systems, website navigation design and flow, content classification, and search engine optimization
• Content management system experience: WordPress, Joomla, Movable Type
• Experience managing SAS systems: Email management (Act-on, MailChimp), Commenting and community building (Gigya, Disqus), Linvio, and Salesforce
• Understanding of data-driven targeting practices of the online and direct marketing industries including transactional data targeting applications and profiling
• Demonstrated experience and a passion for the social technology universe (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare, Flickr, blogs, wikis, RSS, social bookmarking, discussion forums and community software) and user interface design
• Ability to successfully communicate technology related concepts and issue to non-techies
• Experience with online monitoring and measurement platforms including but not limited to Google Analytics, Omniture, Facebook Insights, YouTube Insights, HootSuite, TweetDeck, and Social Mention
• Experience developing and launching email and text messaging campaigns
• Demonstrated excellence in managing people and multiple projects, in highly collaborative settings
• Understanding of the challenges, opportunities and creative constraints facing non-profits as it relates to technology, and ability to be resourceful and strategic in that context
• A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice
